PPR and PPC Fantasy Draft

Alright for those of you doing a PPR league, here is a little sample draft that I once again did on Yahoo! A key difference in this draft is that points are also rewarded for completions, which does increase the value of certain QB’s who enjoy a pass happy offense. Here is the scoring system:

Completions (0.8)
Passing Yards (20 yards per point; 15 points at 300 yards)
Passing Touchdowns (4)
Interceptions (-1)
Sacks (-0.5)
Rushing Attempts (0.5)
Rushing Yards (10 yards per point; 15 points at 200 yards)
Rushing Touchdowns (6)
Receptions (1)
Reception Yards (10 yards per point; 12 points at 150 yards)
Reception Touchdowns (6)
Return Touchdowns (6)
2-Point Conversions (2)
Fumbles Lost (-2)
Offensive Fumble Return TD (6)
Field Goals 20-29 Yards (3)
Field Goals 30-39 Yards (4)
Field Goals 40-49 Yards (5)
Field Goals 50+ Yards (6)
Field Goals Missed 0-19 Yards (-1)
Point After Attempt Made (1)
Point After Attempt Missed (-1)
Sack (1)
Interception (2)
Fumble Recovery (2)
Touchdown (6)
Safety (2)
Block Kick (2)
Return Yards (20 yards per point)
Kickoff and Punt Return Touchdowns (6)
Points Allowed 0 points (10)
Points Allowed 1-6 points (7)
Points Allowed 7-13 points (4)
Points Allowed 14-20 points (1)
Points Allowed 21-27 points (0)
Points Allowed 28-34 points (-1)
Points Allowed 35+ points (-4)

A pretty typical scoring system minus the points per completion and reception. These two additional stats can really change the way people draft, you’ll see that throughout this article. Lastly, before we get into the actual draft, here is the starting rosters:

QB, WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, W/R, K, DEF, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN

Again, a standard starting lineup and bench. Six bench players should be more than enough to add depth to this team, so let’s get this draft started!!!

    Round 1

  1. Ladainian Tomlinson
  2. Tom Brady
  3. Adrian Peterson
  4. Steven Jackson
  5. Brian Westbrook
  6. Joseph Addai
  7. Frank Gore
  8. Peyton Manning
  9. Marion Barber
  10. Marshawn Lynch
  11. My Pick
I get the last pick in the first round and I was almost extremely lucky with Marion Barber falling so low. Unfortunately Barber was taken at the 9th spot, a spot before me, so I went with another young up and coming RB in Buffalo Bills back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch wasn’t particularly known for his receiving out of the backfield last year, but he did manage 1115 yards and 7 TD’s on the ground in only 13 games… plus it was his rookie year. This pick is a little weak due to his lack of receiving presence, but even so, Lynch should be a solid start this year.

    Questionable Choices
Nothing too questionable here, the picks look good and it was a solid first round for all of the teams involved.

    Round 2

  12. Randy Moss
  13. Terrell Owens
  14. Clinton Portis
  15. Reggie Bush
  16. Larry Johnson
  17. Reggie Wayne
  18. Ryan Grant
  19. Braylon Edwards
  20. Brandon Jacobs
  21. Willis McGahee
  22. My Pick
I get one point per every reception and I managed to snag the leagues best wide receiver in Randy Moss. Although many people don’t feel the Patriots offense will do nearly as well as last year, and I agree, I still think they’re going to put up stellar numbers which makes this pick worth it. Moss managed 98 catches last year (98 points from catches alone!) and with the loss of Donte Stallworth I’d expect Moss to see even more action!

    Questionable Choices
My questionable choices for this round have to go to Reggie Bush and Brandon Jacobs. Now Reggie Bush isn’t a huge reach, but I still think, even with all the receptions he gets, that he’s a reach here in the second round. It’s true that he did manage 73 receptions last year, but that number is down from 88 in the previous year. Add in the fact that he only managed 998 yards total with 6 scores and you have a pretty weak option at RB. Jacobs too is a reach here in the second. He did have a breakout year for him last year, but he still wasn’t anything special. 1200 total yards and 6 scores isn’t bad, but is definitely not worth a 2nd round selection.

    Round 3

  23. Andre Johnson
  24. Maurice Jones-Drew
  25. Larry Fitzgerald
  26. Drew Brees
  27. Steve Smith
  28. Laurence Maroney
  29. Tony Romo
  30. T.J. Houshmandzadeh
  31. Marques Colston
  32. Ronnie Brown
  33. My Pick
With the selection of Moss in the 2nd round I found myself with only 1 RB on the roster, time to fill that spot. I was overwhelmed with joy to find Ronnie Brown fall into my lap at the end of the 3rd despite his season ending knee injury and the possibility of sharing a backfield with Ricky Williams. Brown showed signs of light last year that he could be a premier back in the NFL and I wanted to make sure I had him on my roster when he continues where he left off.

    Questionable Picks
Laurence Maroney… come on now. Although he put up 10 scores last year, Maroney has been as torturous as they come when talking fantasy RB’s. Perhaps one of the most inconsistent options out there, especially with the likes of Ronnie Brown, Jamal Lewis, and Michael Turner still available at the position. Maroney is on the falling fast list for good reason… he’s falling… fast!

    Round 4

  34. Brandon Marshall
  35. Antonio Gates
  36. Jamal Lewis
  37. Wes Welker
  38. Torry Holt
  39. Chad Johnson
  40. Plaxico Burress
  41. Carson Palmer
  42. Michael Turner
  43. Willie Parker
  44. My Pick
I now had a solid core of RB’s and the best WR in the league… where to now? Well all the elite options at QB were pretty much off the board, so it made my decision to go with a WR that much simpler. It was a tough choice between Brandon Marshall and Plaxico Burress, but in the long run I like the potential of the Cutler to Marshall hook up. Many are staying away from him due to his offseason mishaps and injuries, but I figure everyone makes mistakes, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will hurt his numbers. I love this kid at WR and truly believe he’s a stud in this league… his 100+ receptions are more than welcome on this team.

    Questionable Picks
Nothing really to questionable here… perhaps the Willie Parker pick. He’s going to be sharing time with rookie stud Rashard Mendenhall and he never reaches the endzone. Parker is also on the falling fast list, be on the lookout.

    Round 5

  45. Anquan Boldin
  46. Jason Witten
  47. Ben Roethlisberger
  48. Roy Williams
  49. Kellen Winslow
  50. Santonio Holmes
  51. Tony Gonzalez
  52. Marvin Harrison
  53. Derek Anderson
  54. Roddy White
  55. My Pick
I really like this Roddy White kid this year. He had a breakout year last year with lackluster QB’s throwing him the ball, so what’s to stop him from putting up some nice numbers this year, perhaps with some Quarterback stability if Matt Ryan wins the job. White put up 83 receptions for 1202 yards and 6 touchdowns, impressive numbers for somebody that no one’s ever heard of. The biggest upside, there are really no other options in the air for the QB… Joe Horn and Laurent Robinson aren’t really going to be posing any huge threats to opposing defenses.

    Questionable Picks
Marvin Harrison is done for in this league. He may put up decent numbers for his team and in reality, but as far as fantasy goes, his days are numbered. The guys knees are just giving out on him and in my opinion he should retire while he can still walk. Plenty of other solid WR’s available here in the 5th round, no need to reach on Marvin Harrison.

    Round 6

  56. Dallas Clark
  57. LenDale White
  58. Hines Ward
  59. Greg Jennings
  60. Donovan McNabb
  61. Matt Hasselbeck
  62. Calvin Johnson
  63. Edgerrin James
  64. Jonathan Stewart
  65. Chris Cooley
  66. My Pick
There had been a small run on Tight Ends, and with 3 WR’s and 2 RB’s already on the roster, it was time for either a QB or a TE to be chosen. I scoured the QB list but nothing special caught my eye that I couldn’t grab later on in the draft, so I went with another breakout player from last year in Colts TE Dallas Clark. Clark was an endzone machine last year managing to hit the zone 11 times on 58 catches! Add on the 616 yards and not only do you have career bests for Dallas Clark, you have a solid fantasy TE.

    Questionable Picks
Nothing too weak, but I would definitely shy away from Donovan McNabb. His career has been on the decline for some time now and he can just never stay healthy. I understand that the QB pickings might have been slim at this point, but there’s no reason this team couldn’t have added another solid WR or RB to the mix.

    Round 7

  67. Marc Bulger
  68. Kevin Curtis
  69. Minnesota Defense
  70. Darren McFadden
  71. Earnest Graham
  72. Jeremy Shockey
  73. Matt Forte
  74. Vernon Davis
  75. Thomas Jones
  76. Selvin Young
  77. My Pick
I would have loved for Matt Forte or Thomas Jones to fall to me here, but unforunately both were taken earlier in the round. That left me with Broncos RB Selvin Young. Now this kid claims he’s going to run for 2,000 yards this year, which would be quite the feat, but he has to beat out the veteran presence of Michael Pittman and newly added rookie RB Ryan Torain first. I think he’ll manage to do so, and although I don’t feel he’ll hit the 2,000 yard mark, I do like him as a 3rd back on my roster.

    Questionable Picks
A defense… in the 7th?? Come on now, there’s still plenty of talent left on the board, there’s no need to start taking defense’s already. A safe draft practice would be to save the defenses for the last few rounds (12-15) and focus on building your depth the rest of the time.

    Round 8

  78. Rashard Mendenhall
  79. Dwayne Bowe
  80. Julius Jones
  81. Lee Evans
  82. San Diego Defense
  83. Rudi Johnson
  84. Benjamin Watson
  85. Chris Chambers
  86. Laveranues Coles
  87. New England Defense
  88. My Pick
Back to back picks and back to back depth at the RB position. I managed to snag Willie Parkers handcuff in rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall. If you check out the poll archives here on the site you’ll see that many believe Mendenhall has a great chance to make an impact this year, and I couldn’t agree more. This could turn out to be a great steal.

    Questionable Picks
Rudi Johnson and Benjamin Watson… it’s a later round, I understand, but you should still try and shy away from these two. Rudi saw a major decline in his stats last season, and I’d expect that to continue on, especially with Kenny Watson behind him. Ben Watson managed to see the endzone 6 times last year, but he only played 12 games and caught 36 passes, not exactly a great option at TE, in any fantasy league.

    Round 9

  89. Nick Folk
  90. Santana Moss
  91. Dallas Cowboys
  92. Kevin Smith
  93. Fred Taylor
  94. Shayne Graham
  95. Joey Galloway
  96. Donald Driver
  97. Felix Jones
  98. Jay Cutler
  99. My Pick
My starting lineup is now complete. I waited all the way until the 9th round to take a QB and I still managed to get a rising star in Jay Cutler to lead my team. Now I have the 1,2 punch with Cutler and Marshall on my team and I couldn’t be happier.

    Questionable Picks
Kickers… in the 9th round. Give me a break. Kickers should be taken last… or within the last couple of rounds, not in the 9th round when there are still solid players available… this disgusts me. You know how many people actually drafted this Nick Folk kid last year? Not many, and you know why? Because kickers are unpredictable!!! I’ll pick a kicker last round every year and still manage to somehow pick one of the highest scoring kickers in the league. Quit wasting picks!!

    Round 10

  100. Jerricho Cotchery
  101. Bernard Berrian
  102. David Garrard
  103. Anthony Gonzalez
  104. DeAngelo Williams
  105. Justin Fargas
  106. Bobby Engram
  107. Deuce McAllister
  108. Chicago Defense
  109. Chester Taylor
  110. My Pick
I’m not a Jets fan by any means… in fact, I’m a Dolphins fan, but I really like this kid Cotchery to put up big numbers this year. Kellen Clemens will more than likely be the starter, which means Cotchery will benefit as his favorite target, not Coles. Even with all the QB flip flopping last year Jerricho managed to snag 82 catches (2nd year in a row) for 1,130 yards and 2 scores. Now hopefully the TD numbers will go up, but even if they don’t, he’s a solid filler for bye weeks.

    Questionable Picks
I actually really liked this round in the draft and I think there were a lot of solid value picks. Really I don’t see a weak spot here in the 10th round.

    Round 11

  111. Ahman Green
  112. Nate Burleson
  113. Todd Heap
  114. Patrick Crayton
  115. Javon Walker
  116. Jake Delhomme
  117. Kenny Watson
  118. Jerry Porter
  119. Chris Johnson
  120. Heath Miller
  121. My Pick
For some reason I felt the need to go with a backup TE here in the 11th round. Usually I wouldn’t even roster a backup TE, but to see Heath Miller fall this low seemed to be too much of a gift to pass up. He only managed 47 catches for 566 yards last year, but he saw the endzone 7 times, something I’ll gladly add to my roster for Mr. Clark’s bye week.

    Round 12

  122. Derrick Mason
  123. Jacksonville Defense
  124. Rob Bironas
  125. Aaron Rodgers
  126. Reggie Brown
  127. Pittsburgh Defense
  128. Limas Sweed
  129. Donte’ Stallworth
  130. Jon Kitna
  131. Matt Schaub
  132. My Pick
To me this Derrick Mason pick was the steal of the draft. Any time you can manage to get a receiver who put up 103 receptions for 1,087 yards and 5 touches in the 12th round, you gotta consider that a great steal. The QB situation may be a little questionable in Baltimore, but I doubt that’s gonna stop Derrick Mason from getting his catches.

    Round 13

  133. Owen Daniels
  134. Adam Vinatieri
  135. Stephen Gostkowski
  136. Eli Manning
  137. Philip Rivers
  138. Ahmad Bradshaw
  139. DeShaun Foster
  140. Denver Defense
  141. Vince Young
  142. Matt Leinart
  143. My Pick
Well there was a huge backup QB run in this round and I just happened to be stuck at the tail end of it. Not too happy with this Matt Leinart pick and feel my depth at QB has really taken a hit. Hopefully Leinart picks it up, or a solid free agent emerges that i can snag.

    Round 14

  144. New York Giants Defense
  145. Alge Crumpler
  146. Chris Brown
  147. Green Bay Defense
  148. Tony Scheffler
  149. Nate Kaeding
  150. Josh Scobee
  151. Jerious Norwood
  152. Carnell Williams
  153. D.J. Hackett
  154. My Pick
How about that, waited until the 14th round to snag a defense and still managed to roster the defending champions pretty solid defensive unit. I’m pretty happy to have the Giants defense aboard and look forward to Umenyiora and company wracking up some points.

    Round 15

  155. Baltimore Defense
  156. Bryant Johnson
  157. Seattle Defense
  158. Tennessee Defense
  159. Donald Lee
  160. Phil Dawson
  161. Josh Brown
  162. Neil Rackers
  163. Kris Brown
  164. David Akers
  165. My Pick
The final round, time for a kicker. Managed to add the always reliable David Akers to the roster, which will complete my starting lineup. Not a bad draft if I do say so myself.

Final Overview

I hope this helped you sort of plan out your draft strategy for those Points Per Reception and Points Per Completion leagues you’re in. Obviously the draft only changes slightly with this scoring system, but it’s still a good idea to have a different plan for each type of draft you do. I feel my team is pretty solid, you might not, that’s fine. Draft with your instinct and have a good time. Good luck out there!
